Spring Skiing Essentials

With the host of endless storms and cold, windy weather behind us this ski season, hopefully the mountains are enticing us with a dump of fresh snow and warmer temperatures in which to indulge some spring skiing and fun.

Choosing the right clothing and kit at this stage is paramount to your enjoyment and comfort, ready to ride and ski all day in the sun or if the cold should reappear stay cosy up the top of the mountain.

Four vital categories at this stage are your ski jacket, ski trouser, base layer and accessories but it is really all about layering, a key word for your spring skiing wardrobe. Think about a great quality baselayer, efficient midlayer and lighter jackets and trousers.

ArdMoor stock superb range of the above namely from the brands Helly Hansen, Pelle P, Maier Sports, Gill and Woolpower whether you need new ski trousers or a reliable, moisture-wicking base layer top.

Jackets

Pick a jacket that is designed to keep you cool on warmer days, efficiently waterproof for those probable snow showers or rain falling plus super comfortable and stylish.

A thinner shell jacket with a warm midlayer and lighter baselayer is a good option for higher temperatures that will cover all bases throughout the day. Many of Helly Hansen jackets have great ventilation options so you can simply mechanically ventilate through releasing a zip and cool immediately while the detachable hood is a great option that you can remove when not using.

For colder days, a jacket with a warm Primaloft fill is strategically placed at seat and knees for warmth and protection while allowing for maximum movement around the arms as you ski.

Midlayers

These create a warm barrier between your base and outer, waterproof jacket. You can choose from a great selection of gilets, fleece hoodies or softshell pieces to create your perfect temperature as you ski.

See our selection of Gill midlayers or the Pelle P range for a great selection of warm, lightweight, non-bulky midlayer options.

Ski trousers

Maier Sports have a superb selection of varying weight ski trousers, a great range of sizes with allowance to let out space for your growing kids and ensure lightweight protection and warmth.

Again, look for a ski pant that have inner thigh venting zippers during spring skiing sessions so you can quickly cool down in warm weather.

Plenty of zipped pockets for small storage like house wallets, keys or mobile phones is essential, while Helly Hansen kit is all equipped with the safety RECCO avalanche detection rescue system that has already been in the news this year for its reliability and success in finding those under the snow. Choose from trousers or salopettes, a bib and brace construction ensures the trousers are the best possible fit and supremely comfortable at the waist.

Baselayers

The essential ingredient for spring skiing, choose base layers constructed with comfortable, non-scratch fabric and flatlocked seams to prevent rubbing or chafing and have moisture-wicking properties to transport moisture to the outside of the shirt and leave you dry within.

The result is you stay warm in cold weather and cool in warm temperatures.

Helly Hansen have a particularly excellent range of versatile base layers designed to handle high activity in cold conditions.

Gill stock a range of stylish racing baselayers which have UPF sun protection built in, which is a great choice when the sun is burning up high and you slip off your jacket while stopping for a well-earned drink and rest.

A high quality range of warm base layer kit is also available from Woolpower, who specialise in layering systems such as merino wool base layers, socks, hats and zipped jackets that would be ideal under lighter waterproof outer jackets during spring skiing conditions.

Alternatively, a great ski jumper is a good option over a light T shirt, Helly stock a range of jumpers & midlayers that sport a half zip neck for ventilation and Ottoman-style articulated elbows for optimal movement as you ski, with old-school racing designs.

Accessories

You should always ensure you have a comfortable pair of socks, gloves, buff, beanie and sunglasses or goggles to use according to the weather but small enough to pack into jacket pockets or a backpack.

Extremities stock a great range of warm, waterproof  beanies and gloves to ensure you stay warm and dry, perfect for winter and spring skiing protection, while Pelle P stock great waterproof backpacks which are perfect for mountain adventures.
