Whether you are a farmer, hunter or just enjoy being out in the country, the landscape and elements can sometimes take their toll on your shoes and boots. By following a few easy steps, you can keep your Hoggs of Fife boots looking their best.
Clean off the mud
When you’ve been out in wet, muddy conditions, clean off any excess mud and dirt. Brush off any dry mud and clean any resistant dirt with warm soapy water. Rinse clean and then allow to dry naturally – Leather and Suede boots can dry out and sometimes crack if dried in front of a fire or radiator or in strong sunlight.
Looking after the leather
If cleaning leather boots or shoes, ensure they are completely dry and then apply a small amount of leather cleaner using a slightly damp cloth. Rub into the leather in small circles and pay special attention to any worn areas or scuffs. Wipe away any excess cream and allow to air dry. When completely dry you can then dress them with a polish, cream or spray. This will help protect your boots the next time you are out.
If you have suede shoes or boots to clean, use a suede brush to remove any mud. Always brush with the grain to avoid damaging the suede. Then use a clean gum eraser or rubber to gently remove any scuffs. Then use a suede and leather cleaner to thoroughly clean the shoe or boot. Pour a small amount on to a dampened suede brush and gently clean your footwear. Dab dry with a towel and then stuff with newspaper and allow to dry naturally, well away from direct heat sources, such as radiators and fires.
Wellington boots are designed to deal with all kinds of mess. But you will dramatically reduce the life of your favourite Hoggs of Fife wellies if you fail to look after them properly. After a hard day in the farmyard, the fields or on the building site, make sure you clean them thoroughly with clean water to remove any harmful chemicals or animal waste. This will help prolong the life of your boots.
An old toothbrush is ideal for this job. Make sure the brush is free of any toothpaste and then gently scrub and brush using warm water and washing up liquid. Rinse thoroughly and then pad with a towel to remove as much water as possible. Then stuff with kitchen roll or tissue and allow to dry fully away from direct heat.
After a good clean, to keep your Hoggs of Fife leather footwear in tip-top condition apply leather conditioner to the leather parts of your boots and shoes. This will help protect them and keep them supple for years to come and keep them looking their best, too.
