Practical Boat Owner (PBO) magazine put a variety of deck shoes to the test in their latest edition, here’s how ArdMoor’s deckshoes fared…
The PBO team took to the water of Weymouth to put some of our deckshoes to the test in challenging conditions to gauge their performance on a wet, slippery deck. Twenty-two pairs were tested in total, including five of ArdMoor’s – two of which were crowned winners!
This deck shoe from Henri Lloyd has a sporty look, and promises to be comfortable with fantastic grip. How did it rate with the PBO team?
PBO feedback: ‘Amazingly sticky on the acrylic hatch fore and aft. Really, really good on the shiny side bits.’
PBO verdict: Lightweight trainer-style shoes with good grip and foot support. Quite snug sizing. Impressive performance, but the look of the shoe was not to everyone’s taste.
So, these would be ideal for those who favour a more modern, sporty-looking deck shoe with fantastic grip.
Made from soft nubuck leather, the Gill Women’s Baltimore deck shoe is a classic moccasin design and offers water resistance and a non-marking, non-slip outsole.
PBO feedback: ‘The leather is incredibly soft. The fit is narrower and longer than the Clipper. The pliable sole gripped well on the shiny deck edges and bent around the deck eye, which wasn’t too uncomfortable. The stub test was fine due to longer length.’
PBO verdict: Comfortable, classy shoes. The grip felt less secure than their Quayside counterparts.
These ladies deck shoes would be ideal for women who are looking for a comfortable deck shoe with a reasonable amount of grip.
The Gill Auckland 3 Eye Deck Boots have been constructed with hand sewn detail and offer an impact sole for ultimate comfort.
PBO feedback: ‘They’re comfortable. The boot’s up to the ankle but still has flexibility.’
PBO verdict: Mixed results in the grip test, but the testers liked the stylish design.
The Gill Auckland 3 Eye Deck Boot is the choice footwear for those who want a stylish sailing boot with maximum support and sufficient grip.

Quayside Sydney Men’s Deck Shoes – PBO Best Budget Buy
The Quayside Sydney Shoe is a versatile shoe which offers a fully cushioned foot bed, nubuck oil finished leather and breathable mesh vents.
PBO feedback: ‘A pretty good grip on the forehatch. The pliable sole moulded around the deck eye and was not uncomfortable. The toe protection was also good due to the lip of the sole. The arch of the sole was handy for gripping to the shiny deck edge.’
