Horse Rug Size Guide

If you’ve never bought a rug online before, it can seem a confusing process with a horse appearing difficult to measure. There can also be a range of sizing methods used, with brands giving their sizing in centimetres, or feet and inches. However, you can easily measure a horse with a tape measure by either measuring their back from their wither to tail, or from the centre of the chest to the hind-quarter.

The most commonly used horse rug sizing system in the UK is a combination of feet and inches, (e.g 4′ 6″) and is effectively a measurement of the length the rug needs to be from the chest to the tail flap.

To measure your horse, run a tape measure from the middle of their chest to the widest point of their buttock or hindquarters. This measurement will help you to determine which size you need and as so many rugs have adjustable buckles and straps you can be sure of a comfortable fit for your horse.

Many brands from Europe use a centimetre measurement the length of the back, from the wither to the tail to gauge effectively measuring the top of the horse, rather than along the side of the horse like the UK equivalent.

A rug can have many uses, for example, a pony may still need a turnout rug is they are in regular work or clipped. If you are travelling your horse, a travel rug helps to maintain a comfortable temperature without overheating or becoming chilly. Fast-drying fabrics, waterproof shields and even thermal heat reflection are all available to make sure your horse is happy in work, in the field or in the stable.
