There’s nothing quite like slipping on a wax jacket that’s weathered a few adventures but still looks and feels amazing. If, like us, your favourite jacket has seen some seasons, a little TLC can bring it back to life. A brush down, a clean, and a nourishing coat of wax is all it takes to keep it waterproof, soft, and ready for whatever the outdoors throws at us.
A Little Story Behind the Wax
Did you know the waxed jacket has its roots in 15th century Scotland? Sailors used fish oil on their sails to help them glide smoothly across the waves – and unknowingly, they laid the foundations for one of Britain’s most loved country classics.
By coating their cotton sails, the sailors created a lightweight, waterproof fabric – perfect for clothing. Over time, simple capes and hats became jackets and trousers, and the waxed jacket we know, and love today was born.
Why We Re-Wax Every Year
If our jackets spend a lot of time outdoors, a yearly re-wax is a game-changer. It keeps the fabric waterproof, restores its colour, and ensures it lasts for years – even decades. Here’s our step-by-step guide to keeping our jackets in tip-top shape:
Step 1: Prep the Jacket
We start by giving our jackets a good wipe with a clean, dry cloth to remove dust and grit, anything that could scratch the fabric when waxing. Make sure pockets are empty and then give the jacket a gentle rinse with cool water. Avoid detergents or hot water, they strip the wax and fade the lining.
Step 2: Dry Naturally
Patience is key here. We hang our jackets somewhere away from direct sunlight or heat and leave them for around 24 hours. Sometimes it takes a little longer, and that’s fine, rushing this step can undo all our hard work.
Step 3: Wax On
This is our favourite part:
- Lay the jacket flat on a protected surface – a kitchen table covered in newspaper works perfectly.
- Warm the wax gently until soft enough to spread.
- Using a soft cloth, work the wax into small sections, paying special attention to seams and edges. Taking our time here ensures an even, beautiful finish.
- Keep a second cloth handy to wipe away any drips or excess wax.
- For a really smooth result, gently warm the wax with a hairdryer so it blends perfectly into the fabric.
Step 4: Let It Rest
Finally, we leave the jackets to dry naturally for another day. Once ready, they feel almost new – soft, waterproof, and ready for the next adventure.
A Jacket That Lasts a Lifetime
Every time we re-wax our jackets, we’re reminded why we love them so much. They’re more than coats – they’re companions for our adventures, and with a little care, they’ll continue to be reliable partners for many seasons to come.
