Socks rarely get much thought until they let you down. A pair that bunches, rubs or soaks through on the walk in can leave you with blisters and cold feet long before the stalk is over. Good stalking socks keep your feet warm, dry and comfortable over miles of rough ground, and they matter just as much as the boots around them.
Why Socks Are Part of Your Footwear System
Stalking combines long walks with long periods sitting still, often in wet conditions. Your feet sweat on the climb and then cool quickly when you stop. Deer stalking socks made from merino wool or technical fibre blends move that moisture away from the skin, hold warmth even when damp and cut down the friction that causes blisters. A well-fitting sock also helps your boot hold your foot securely, which reduces fatigue by the end of the day.
Choosing the Right Weight and Fit
Match sock thickness to the season and your boots. Lightweight socks suit warm spring and summer roe stalking in lighter footwear, while mid and heavyweight socks give extra cushioning and warmth for autumn hill days, winter hind stalking and cold high seat mornings. Reinforced heels and toes stand up to repeated wear, and a cuff that stays up without cutting in keeps them in place under gaiters and breeks. Always try boots on with the socks you will stalk in, as a thicker sock can change the fit considerably. Woodland-friendly colours are useful too if your socks show above the boot.

Looking After Your Socks
Wool socks last far longer with a little care. Wash them inside out on a cool wool cycle, avoid fabric conditioner and let them dry naturally rather than on a hot radiator. Rotating two or three pairs gives the fibres time to recover their loft, so they keep their cushioning and warmth through the season. On longer trips, a spare dry pair in the rucksack is one of the simplest comforts you can carry.
