Clay shooting in summer: Why the season never really stops and how to dress for it

Clay shooting in summer: Why the season never really stops and how to dress for it

Most field sports have a clear close season. Clay shooting doesn't. The stands stay open, the clays keep flying, and whether you're keeping your eye sharp between driven days or competing through the summer calendar, the sport carries on regardless of the month. What does change is the kit you need to get the most from it.

Summer Shooting Is a Different Game

Shooting in July looks nothing like shooting in October. The light is harsh, the heat builds quickly, and standing on an exposed stand for a few hours will test your clothing choices far more than a cool autumn morning ever would. Overheating affects concentration, and concentration is everything in clay shooting. Dressing right isn't about looking the part; it's about performing consistently from the first stand to the last.

What to Look for in Summer Shooting Clothing

The priorities shift considerably once the temperature climbs. Breathability becomes the lead requirement, followed closely by freedom of movement and lightweight construction.

Key features to consider:

  • Moisture-wicking fabrics that pull sweat away from the skin and keep you dry through a long session
  • Lightweight, unlined shells or shirts that let air circulate without restricting your mount and swing
  • Stretch panels or technical fabrics that move with you rather than pulling across the shoulders
  • Minimal bulk so nothing interferes with gun fit or cheek weld
  • UV protection in fabrics where available, particularly for longer outdoor sessions

Layering Still Matters

Early morning shoots and evening competitions can still carry a chill, particularly in the north or at altitude. A lightweight mid-layer you can strip off quickly is worth bringing along even in midsummer. The key is keeping each layer slim and non-restrictive rather than reaching for something heavier.

Don't Neglect the Details

Footwear matters more than most shooters consider. Good grip on grass or loose ground keeps your stance steady, and comfort over a long day on your feet is as important as your jacket choice. A cap or peaked hat helps manage glare and keeps your eye line clean on bright days.

Summer clay shooting rewards preparation. Browse the ArdMoor clay shooting clothing collection and get the right kit on before the season gets any warmer.
