Northern Hunting Clothing Care Guide: Keep Your Kit Performing

Northern Hunting Clothing Care Guide: Keep Your Kit Performing

When you invest in high-performance outdoor clothing, proper care is essential to keep it working as it should. Northern Hunting garments are designed for demanding conditions, from wet woodland stalking to long days on the hill, but without the right maintenance, even the best kit will lose its edge.

This guide covers everything you need to know to keep your Northern Hunting clothing clean, breathable, and weather-ready for years to come.

Below is a full, up-to-date care guide based on Northern Hunting's own recommendations.

Why Proper Care Matters

Northern Hunting gear is built with advanced materials like the ADDVENTEX™ membrane, designed to block wind and rain while allowing heat and moisture to escape.

Without proper care:

  • Breathability can reduce
  • Water repellency can wear off
  • Fabrics can degrade faster

Looking after your kit isn’t just about appearance, it directly impacts performance in the field.

Washing Your Northern Hunting Clothing

Keep It Simple:

  • Wash only when necessary to protect technical fabrics
  • For light dirt, a cold rinse or wipe down is often enough
  • Avoid over-washing to maintain the garment’s protective qualities

Use the Right Detergent:

  • Always use a technical or specialist detergent
  • Avoid:
    • Fabric softener
    • Standard biological detergents

These can clog the membrane and reduce breathability.

Washing Instructions:

  • Wash at low temperatures (30°C max)
  • Use a gentle cycle
  • Close zips and fastenings before washing

Maintaining Waterproof Performance (DWR Coating)

Over time, your jacket or trousers may stop beading water on the surface. This doesn’t mean it’s no longer waterproof - it just needs reproofing.

When to Reproof:

  • After around 5 washes
  • When water stops beading and begins soaking into the fabric

How to Reproof:

  • Use a spray-on or wash-in reproofer
  • Apply when the garment is slightly damp
  • Allow to air dry fully before use

Some garments may benefit from gentle heat activation (always check care labels first).

Caring for ADDVENTEX™ Membrane Clothing

Garments using ADDVENTEX™ technology rely on a microporous structure to balance waterproofing and breathability.

To keep it performing:

  • Avoid heavy detergents that can block pores
  • Do not tumble dry on high heat
  • Never iron directly onto the membrane

Treat it properly and it will continue to keep you dry while allowing heat to escape - ideal for active use in the British countryside.

Wool & Natural Fibre Care

Some Northern Hunting pieces include wool or natural blends.

Best Practice:

  • Air garments for 24 hours to refresh naturally
  • Wash only when needed
  • Use a wool-specific detergent
  • Select a wool or delicate cycle

Wool is naturally odour-resistant, so less washing is better.

Storage Tips

  • Store garments dry and clean
  • Avoid compressing for long periods
  • Hang jackets where possible to maintain shape

Keeping your kit in good condition between uses is just as important as cleaning it.

Northern Hunting clothing is designed for serious outdoor use, combining durability with technical performance. With the right care routine, you’ll extend the life of your gear and ensure it performs when you need it most.
