Caring for Base Layers

Helly Hansen base layers, including LIFA®, LIFA® Active, and Merino blends, are engineered to keep you dry, warm, and comfortable. To maintain their performance, always check the care label before washing. Synthetic base layers can be machine washed on a gentle cycle using a mild detergent. Wool or Merino blends should be washed on a wool cycle or hand-washed, avoiding heat and fabric softeners that could damage fibers.

After washing, air drying is recommended. Tumble drying can cause shrinkage or affect fabric properties unless the care label specifically allows it. Regular washing keeps base layers fresh and free from odours while maintaining their moisture-wicking capabilities.

Maintaining Shell and Outer Layers

Helly Hansen’s waterproof garments, including Helly Tech® jackets and pants, require careful handling to preserve their waterproofing and durable water-repellent (DWR) coatings. Wash these items only when necessary, such as when water stops beading on the surface or breathability seems reduced.

Washing instructions:

1. Close all zippers, Velcro, flaps and cords.
2. Use a technical cleaner made for waterproof gear.
3. Wash on a gentle cycle with cold or lukewarm water; avoid fabric softener and bleach.
4. A second rinse can help remove residual detergent that can reduce performance.

Drying & waterproofing:

  • Tumble dry on low/medium heat (if the care label allows) - this can help reactivate DWR.
  • Alternatively, air dry in a ventilated area if tumble drying isn’t recommended.
  • If water no longer beads after washing, apply a DWR treatment (spray-on or wash-in) and then dry again to activate it.

Caring for Down Jackets

Down jackets are an essential part of Helly Hansen’s insulated range, providing lightweight warmth. To prevent clumping and maintain insulation, wash down jackets using a gentle cycle with lukewarm water and a down-specific detergent. Running an extra rinse cycle ensures all detergent residues are removed.

Drying is critical. Tumble dry on low heat with dryer balls or clean tennis balls to restore loft and maintain even distribution of the insulation. Avoid high heat, which can damage the down and the jacket’s construction.

Footwear Care

Helly Hansen footwear, including hiking boots and outdoor shoes, should be cleaned according to material type.

  • Leather: Conditioning and waterproofing wax or balsam.
  • Nubuck/Suede: Use suedespecific cleaners and brushes.
  • Others: Waterproof sprays or repellents designed for synthetic footwear.

Regular cleaning helps maintain performance and prolongs the life of your footwear.

General Care Tips

Always read the care label before washing any Helly Hansen item. Avoid mixing technical garments with regular laundry, as different fabrics require different care. Use the minimum amount of detergent necessary and wash only when needed to preserve the garment’s performance features.

By following these guidelines, your Helly Hansen gear will continue to deliver in the field, on the Mountains, or wherever your adventures take you.
