The Maternal Grouse Project: What New GWCT Research Means for Your Moor

If you manage a grouse moor, you'll know the frustration of a poor breeding season with no clear answer as to why. The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust has now launched its most ambitious study yet to get to the bottom of it, the Maternal Grouse Project, and the early findings are worth every gamekeeper's attention.

Why This Research Matters on the Ground

GWCT has monitored the same grouse moors across England, Scotland and Wales since the early 1980s, giving it one of the longest running datasets of its kind anywhere in the world. That record has shown some worrying trends over the past decade, with sharp declines in pair counts on many moors followed by inconsistent recovery. Some estates have bounced back well. Others have struggled through repeated poor seasons despite similar management approaches.

This is exactly the puzzle keepers face every spring. You can do everything right on paper, heather management, predator control, parasite treatment, and still end up with a disappointing brood count. The Maternal Grouse Project was set up to explain why.

A Different Approach to Understanding Breeding Success

Rather than looking at single pressures like disease, parasites or predation on their own, this study follows individual hens through the entire breeding season. Researchers catch and radio tag hens each spring, then track their condition, nesting attempts, egg production and chick survival alongside detailed measurements of heather quality, insect availability, weather and worm burdens.

The idea is to understand how all these factors interact, rather than treating them as separate problems. A hen going into the breeding season in poor condition because of a hard winter or thin heather growth may be far more vulnerable to parasites or bad weather than one in good condition, even on a well keepered moor.

Now in its fourth year in the North Pennines and newly expanded into north-east Scotland, the project is building a picture that should eventually translate into practical guidance estates can act on, not just academic findings.

What the fieldwork actually involves:

  • Weekly heather sampling through spring to assess nutritional value ahead of laying
  • Monitoring of cotton grass and cranefly emergence as key food sources for hens and chicks
  • Nest checks recording clutch size, egg measurements and hatch dates using temperature loggers
  • Invertebrate sampling after hatching to assess chick food availability in the critical first week
  • Site by site rainfall recording, since damp ground supports insect emergence but heavy rain can harm chick survival

What This Could Mean for Future Moor Management

The long-term aim is practical guidance that helps estates build more resilient grouse populations and more consistent bags, even as weather patterns shift and management comes under greater scrutiny. For keepers, that means future advice grounded in what is actually driving nest failures and chick losses on real moors, rather than assumptions carried over from past seasons.

It is early days, and the project will not expand into southern Scotland until 2027, but the direction is encouraging. Understanding the full picture, from hen condition right through to chick survival, gives keepers a stronger hand when planning habitat work, feeding strategies and season by season expectations.
