Stalking Footwear

Boots decide how a stalking day goes more than almost any other piece of kit. Wet feet by mid-morning, a blister on the walk in or an ankle turned on loose stones can end a stalk before you have seen a deer. Our stalking footwear is chosen to keep you comfortable, sure-footed and quiet over hours of walking on British woodland, moorland and hill ground.

Matching Your Boots to the Ground

Where you stalk should decide what you wear. Woodland and farmland roe stalking often suits a lighter, more flexible boot that lets you feel the ground and place each step quietly through leaf litter and twigs. Hill stalking for red deer calls for a stiffer boot with firm ankle support and a deep, grippy sole for steep, wet heather and scree. Our deer stalking tips and essential kit guide explains how your kit should change with the species and the season.

What Makes a Good Stalking Boot

A waterproof, breathable membrane keeps water out while letting sweat escape, which matters on long climbs followed by long sits. Leather boots mould to your feet and last for years with regular care, while synthetic boots are often lighter and quicker to break in. Look for a padded collar, a supportive footbed and lacing that holds your heel firmly, because a boot that moves on your foot causes blisters and fatigue. Insulated boots are worth considering for winter hind stalking and frosty high seat mornings. Fit is personal, so allow for the thickness of your stalking socks when choosing a size.

Caring for Your Stalking Boots

Boots last far longer with regular attention. Rinse off mud after each outing, stuff them with newspaper and let them dry slowly away from the fire or radiator, which can crack leather and weaken glued seams. Condition leather boots every so often and reproof fabric boots when water stops beading. A well cared for pair will stay comfortable and waterproof for many seasons of stalking.
